The VL53L0X from ST Microelectronics is a time-of-flight ranging system integrated into a compact module. The sensor contains a very tiny invisible IR source, and a matching detector. It measures how long it takes for emitted pulses of infrared laser light to reach the nearest object and be reflected back to a detector. Since it uses a very narrow light source, it is good for determining distance of only the surface directly in front of it. Compare to Sharp IR distance sensors that try to measure the amount of light bounced, the VL53L0x is much more precise and doesn't have linearity problems.
The sensor includes voltage regulator for 3V to 5V supply and 3.3v / 5V logic level shifter.
